JUS Media? Global Classroom – Jamaican Islander Version (JMGC-JI)

To expand the reach of JUS Media?, a condensed digital/online school-based version of the intervention called the “JUS Media? Global Classroom”, was created for use in physical and virtual classrooms in Jamaica.

This digitization was led by PhD Research Fellows, Tori Simenec and Sarah Gillespie, along with a team including Nita Senesathith (volunteer post-bac), Sarah Eckerstorfer (former undergrad RA), Salma Ibrahim (undergrad RA), Saari Lane (undergrad RA), Dr. Ferguson. (PI), and a Consultant in Jamaica, Arianne Anderson.

JMGC includes five animated video modules that address 1) nutrition, 2) identifying advertisements, 3) remote acculturation, 4) media literacy, and 5) subvertising (a strategy involving ‘spoofing’ or satirizing advertisements that is used to encourage participants to think critically). The 35-minute animated program is accompanied by two interactive activities: creating a healthy meal using the Jamaican Ministry of Health’s nutrition guidelines, and subvertising an unhealthy food advertisement. The program is designed to be delivered in school-based settings, whether in-person or online, and offers flexibility to be delivered in either one or two class periods.

We know educators and students are busy — that is why JMGC is ‘plug and play’! We can facilitate JMGC lessons remotely (e.g., on zoom) as a guest presentation, or we can provide you access to the video curriculum and activity sheets for educators who prefer to be more hands on.
