4.1—Linguistic Diversity and Literacy Learning

Multilingual students bring a variety of language backgrounds when they come to school such as speaking a language other than English at home, operating in bilingual worlds, or speaking a variation of English that differs from that presented in the classroom. Educators and school leaders benefit from understanding how multilingual students can best be supported as they learn to read, write, and speak English as a new language while they call upon the linguistic resources they already have. Many school-wide structures and instructional practices help ensure that the road to literacy for linguistically-diverse students can be as smooth and productive as possible.
