Carlson’s basic research focuses on developmental processes that underlie adaptive and maladaptive functioning across the lifespan. She is especially interested in the ways that individuals become vulnerable to psychopathology early in development.
Recent research has addressed:
- the impact of trauma and early life stress on development, including the developmental antecedents and consequences of mental and physical health; and
- the role of early relationships in buffering the effects of early adversity and supporting the healthy development of children at risk for disturbance and disorder.
Through affiliation with the Irving Harris Foundation, Carlson has worked to translate these findings and the science of early development to early childhood policy and practice.
